Folge vom 08.06.2019Nine stories about our nine pints of bloodMost people have a minimum of 9 pints of blood in their bodies. In her book Nine Pints, Rose George takes us on a journey with nine stories exploring the science of blood and our changing attitudes to blood in different cultures. We produce 2,000,000 new red blood cells each second. The cells have a lot of work to do. They carry oxygen to organs and tissues. They carry nutrients, heat and hormones. Blood transports waste products and where necessary, clots to stop the flow. It fights infections and foreign invaders. In Nepal Rose meets girls challenging taboos around menstruation. In the Canadian prairies, she visits a controversial plasma clinic. She tours a leech farm in Wales and learns about the role leeches play in modern surgery. Rose George is heard in her appearance at Adelaide Writers Week.
